When I first met Walter, he had just returned from serving overseas in the Army and was working as an engineer. Our friends thought we made an unlikely pair - me with my wild curly hair and passion for art, him so steady and serious in his starched shirts. But from that very first dance at the church fundraiser, I was smitten by his kind eyes and warm smile. We wrote to each other constantly during the year Walter was away for work. I'd pore over each letter, treasuring his words of affection. When he popped the question during his Christmas visit, my heart soared. We were married in a small ceremony at my parents' home the following summer, surrounded by family and friends. Walter's tender kiss as we said "I do" told me our love was built to last. In the decades since, we've supported each other through many adventures. I pursued my dream while raising our two children. Walter rose up the ranks at his engineering firm. We've moved homes a few times as our careers and family changed, but Chicago has always been our true home. Now in retirement, Walter and I enjoy puttering around our garden, going to concerts at Ravinia, and spending time with our grandkids. I treasure our daily routines - cooking dinner together each night, curling up to read side by side, holding hands during our walks in nearby Lincoln Park.
