Tony and I couldn't believe 8 years had passed since our wedding day in Vancouver. As Chinese Canadians who met in university, we had built a wonderful life together in Victoria raising our young boy. To celebrate, I arranged a long weekend getaway to Parksville Beach on Vancouver Island. As soon as we arrived, 5-year-old son ran excitedly into the ocean waves. Watching him play in the surf, Tony and I reminisced about our courtship in BC. That evening, we built a bonfire while our son roasted marshmallows. Under the stars, we thanked him for making our family complete. The next day, the three of us explored rocky tidepools, finding colorful critters. For our anniversary dinner, we chose a pizza place we knew our son would enjoy. Over slices and laughs, I felt grateful for our little family and the last eight years of adventure. Though my career as a pediatrician kept me busy, Tony and our darling boy made it all worthwhile. As we packed the car to head home, the little boy passed out in the backseat, tired from fun in the sun. Holding hands in comfortable silence, Tony and I looked forward to the years still to share together on this beautiful coast, as a family.
